Location:
Whirligig Brewing
397 Railroad Street, Unit #2
St. Johnsbury, VT
Poets and poetry lovers are invited to gather monthly at Whirligig Brewing in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to share food and words at a Poetry Potluck hosted by the brewery and Catamount Arts, as part of PoemTown St. Johnsbury. Poetry Potlucks will be held on the second Wednesday of each month, with the first one on September 14 from 7-9pm. Each gathering is hosted by a local poet.
All are welcome to bring poems or prose of their own or of others to read, or just come to listen and share food and conversation with other poetry lovers. There is no obligation to bring food, but participants are welcome to do so.
“Poets gathering to share their words and a meal creates an incredible experience, helping to build and strengthen bonds within the communities in which we are creating our art,” said poet Jen Hudgens. Whirligig Brewing owner and brewer Geoffrey Sewake added, "Whirligig is excited to support the community and the Arts. Hosting a monthly Poetry Potluck on the second Wednesday of the month is a perfect way for us to create fun spaces for creativity and energy in our Northeast Kingdom community."
Whirligig Brewing is a small one barrel nano brewery and taproom located in downtown St Johnsbury, utilizing local and regional grain and hops in the majority of their beers. They brew a wide variety of beer styles, including IPAs, lagers and stouts, but specialize in sours and wild ales. Whirligig Brewing is proudly BIPOC-owned.
PoemTown St. Johnsbury celebrates poetry in all forms and by all people, primarily during the month of April, which is National Poetry Month.

Since marrying in 2002, two of Canada’s brightest stars have been captivating audiences all over North America with their exceptional musical skills and obvious joy at playing the fiddle together. Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy have received both industry-acclaim and a loyal fan base by combining their magnificent individual talents, giving audiences an unforgettable musical experience every performance.
Being part of musical families, Natalie and Donnell were born into their musical careers. Hailing from Cape Breton Island, Natalie received her first fiddle at the age of nine, launching a career that has lasted for more than 30 years. Her first recording was released when she was only 16 and she has never looked back. MacMaster's many projects include collaborations with Alison Krauss, Carlos Santana, the Chieftains, Paul Simon, Pavarotti, and Yo-Yo Ma. Her live performances are a testament to her incandescent musicianship and boundless energy, featuring foot-tapping rave-ups, heart-rending ballads, and world-class step dancing.
Perfecting his astonishing talent since the age of three, Donnell has literally spent his entire life with a fiddle in his hand. His parents, a fiddle-playing father from Ontario and a step-dancing mother from Cape Breton, were his source of inspiration and guidance. His mesmerizingly exultant and high-energy performances have become Donnell Leahy’s musical signature.

The St. Johnsbury Players present William Wycherley's Restoration comedy, "The Country Wife." Notorious womanizer Harry Horner (Terry Klein) convinces Dr. Quack (William Hyde) to spread a rumor that he is impotent, gaining him the sympathy of the husbands and the trust of their wives. The ploy works wonders on Sir Jasper Fidget (Brendan Hadash), who leaves his wife (Ursula Malabre-Speicher) and sister (Michaela Stone) in Horner’s care. Meanwhile, the jealous Jack Pinchwife (Tristan Barrett) attempts to hide away his new wife Margery (Kayla Henesy), but his efforts backfire. Hilarity ensues in this bawdy comedy, which was controversial in its day for its explicitness and anti-Puritan ideology. Updated to the 1920s Jazz Age, “The Country Wife” will be a raunchy evening of comic fun.

The Rollin' Rust is an indie/folk group from the foothills of Central New York. Being led by singer-songwriter James VanDeuson, The Rollin' Rust celebrates the distinguished writing style of a vagabond folk artist. Joined by his talented friends, Jim Hearn (lead guitarist) and Kyle Dennis (percussion) James' songs now have a distinct edginess to them, sounding almost as if you took a classic folk song and corrupted its mind with years of crazed festivals and long nights in smoky southern bar rooms. The Rollin' Rust boys have been playing music together since they were just teenagers, crafting a truly unique sound that could only be formed by such long-lasting friendship and intimate evenings with the highway itself.

Matthew Mercury is a story. A story about keeping the light on and having a vision. Matthew Mercury pays homage to the feeling of New York narratives a la Lou Reed, punctuated by Television-like guitar signatures, while making a detour out to the earnest romance of Springsteen's darkened trestles, all the while genuflecting to the artistry of Brill Building-esquehooks. Born out of a songwriting and production partnership between Matt Dublin and Ezra Oklan, Matthew Mercury aims to celebrate stories threaded into catchy choruses with an overall pop delivery that no healthy person can resist. What can I say about these guys that won't sound like more swirling arpeggios of sophistry, except play their sound. Loud. You will understand. And don't get mad if they get stuck in your head and turn your light on too.

Performed in a one-of-a-kind suit-stage, this show packs classic hand puppetry, Dadaist ventriloquism, and stand-up comedy into a cardboard box and delivers it, with impeccable timing, live on stage.
Inside the box are the Baffos — two slapstick chaps who keep the sun, moon and everything else running on schedule. From the moment the lid opens, audiences are captivated as the Baffos juggle and dance their way through the day’s chores, despite the undeniable evidence that their world is changing.
A daring work of puppetry and object manipulation, full of beautiful images, junk music sonatas, and Modern Times Theater’s unique brand of all ages comedy. This re-envisioning of classic hand puppet forms is digital entertainment as it was meant to be: two hands, ten fingers, and no camera tricks.
Puppeteered by Justin Lander and directed by Rose Friedman, The Baffo Box Show was supported by a 2022 Family Grant from the Jim Henson Foundation.
Modern Times Theater has been making and touring puppet shows and variety acts, and creating public community events since 2007. They pursue a radically divergent model of art making, creating venues in unlikely locations, and revitalizing the historic, run-down, and defunct. Working in populist theater forms, they seek to reinvent and reimagine classic American entertainment.
Co-founders Rose Friedman and Justin Lander are a husband and wife duo, producers for Vermont Vaudeville and alumni of the Bread and Puppet Theater.

For the last thirty-two years, The Peking Acrobats have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control.
The Peking Acrobats are part of a time-honored Chinese tradition, rooted in centuries of Chinese history and folk art. Tradition demands that each generation of acrobats add its own improvements and embellishments; because of this, high honor is conferred upon those skilled enough to become acrobats. The Peking Acrobats seek to uphold this rich and ancient folk art tradition, bringing it to new technical heights while integrating twenty-first century technology.
The Peking Acrobats have been featured on television shows including Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous, Ellen’s Really Big Show (hosted by Ellen DeGeneres), The Wayne Brady Show, That’s Incredible, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and NBC’s Ring In The New Year Holiday Special. They set the world record for the Human Chair Stack on FOX Network’s Guinness Book Primetime television show in 1999: they balanced six people precariously atop six chairs twenty-one feet up in the air without safety lines, astounding audiences with their bravery and dexterity. They were featured in Steven Soderbergh’s hit film Ocean’s Eleven playing alongside Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Peking Acrobats’ alumnus Shaobo Qin also appeared in that film’s two sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen.
“The Peking Acrobats are pushing the envelope of human possibility, combining agility and grace in remarkable feats of pure artistry.” —Clive Davis, New York Post.

Afrofuturist / Oro-shamanic poet and bass clarinetist Toussaint St. Negritude dually conjures the lyric timbre of both his horn and verse, creating his own collaborative ceremony of empathic wonders. Black, queer, artist, mountaineer, devout congregant of the wilderness, Toussaint St. Negritude honors his multiplicity of freedoms quite seriously. Perennially informed by the pan-cosmic realms of philosophic discovery and the corresponding spirituality evoked by the surrounding Green Mountains of Vermont, his works are inherently intoned by both the liberation and the expansion of the African Diaspora.

Yamato was founded by Masa Ogawa in 1993 in Nara, ‘the land of Yamato” which is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. Presently based in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, Yamato travels all over the word with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums, putting its very soul into the unusual instruments, whose sound stirs the hearts of people everywhere.
In the village of Asuka, a place with more than a thousand years of history and culture, Yamato seeks new expression with Wadaiko as its backbone. They think of the sound of the drums – made of animal skin and ancient trees, some of which are more than 400 years old – as a pulse or heartbeat (Shin-on), the center of life and the source of power which pulsates within the human body.
Like the strong and sturdy heartbeats of a lonely runner with a sleek and powerful body, Yamato attempts to create the energy of life, which envelops the audience and performers. What one feels when surrounded by the sound of Wadaiko, brought out by these highly trained performers, is what the Japanese call “Tamashy”, translated as soul, spirit, and psyche – the basic elements of life. It is something which is invisible and intangible but whose existence is certainly felt. The pulse, carried down from antiquity, will resonate within all the bodies gathered at any given performance.
“A genuinely theatrical experience, delivered with balletic grace and infectious humor.” – Times of London
“Imagine two thousand years of samurais, shinto meditation and sake being built up and released through nine fiesty young drummers and their kits.” – KPAS (UK)

Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn humankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem - it's on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. One of opera’s most beloved works receives its first new Met staging in 19 years—a daring vision by renowned English director Simon McBurney that The Wall Street Journal declared “the best production I’ve ever witnessed of Mozart’s opera.” Nathalie Stutzmann conducts the Met Orchestra, with the pit raised to make the musicians visible to the audience and allow interaction with the cast. In his Met-debut staging, McBurney lets loose a volley of theatrical flourishes, incorporating projections, sound effects, and acrobatics to match the spectacle and drama of Mozart’s fable. The brilliant cast includes soprano Erin Morley as Pamina, tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Tamino, baritone Thomas Oliemans in his Met debut as Papageno, soprano Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night, and bass Stephen Milling as Sarastro.
