Since marrying in 2002, two of Canada’s brightest stars have been captivating audiences all over North America with their exceptional musical skills and obvious joy at playing the fiddle together. Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy have received both industry-acclaim and a loyal fan base by combining their magnificent individual talents, giving audiences an unforgettable musical experience every performance.
Being part of musical families, Natalie and Donnell were born into their musical careers. Hailing from Cape Breton Island, Natalie received her first fiddle at the age of nine, launching a career that has lasted for more than 30 years. Her first recording was released when she was only 16 and she has never looked back. MacMaster's many projects include collaborations with Alison Krauss, Carlos Santana, the Chieftains, Paul Simon, Pavarotti, and Yo-Yo Ma. Her live performances are a testament to her incandescent musicianship and boundless energy, featuring foot-tapping rave-ups, heart-rending ballads, and world-class step dancing.
Perfecting his astonishing talent since the age of three, Donnell has literally spent his entire life with a fiddle in his hand. His parents, a fiddle-playing father from Ontario and a step-dancing mother from Cape Breton, were his source of inspiration and guidance. Come get moving and have fun with Quahog Dance! No experience is necessary. Quahog Dance Theatre is starting its second year at Catamount Arts in the Cabaret Room on the first floor located on Eastern Ave. in St. Johnsbury. Bluegrass Night is back! On Saturday evening April 8, at 7pm the popular concert series, held at the Catamount Arts wonderful ArtPort venue in the Green Mountain Mall (2000 Memorial Drive, St. Johnsbury Center) will feature Beg, Steal or Borrow.
Since its formation in 2013 with a mission to resurrect the music of Old and In the Way, Beg, Steal or Borrow has appeared at festivals and venues throughout the northeastern United States and features an ever-growing repertoire of original music and classic covers. Known for their vocal harmony and high-energy instrumental arrangements, Beg, Steal or Borrow has won bluegrass festival band competitions at Podunk, Grey Fox, and Thomas Point Beach, hence being dubbed a “Triple Crown Bluegrass Band” by Bluegrass Today. Based in Vermont, the quintet released its celebrated debut album of original music, Old Mountain Time, in 2019. For the last thirty-two years, The Peking Acrobats have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control.
The Peking Acrobats are part of a time-honored Chinese tradition, rooted in centuries of Chinese history and folk art. Tradition demands that each generation of acrobats add its own improvements and embellishments; because of this, high honor is conferred upon those skilled enough to become acrobats. The Peking Acrobats seek to uphold this rich and ancient folk art tradition, bringing it to new technical heights while integrating twenty-first century technology.
The Peking Acrobats have been featured on television shows including Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous, Ellen’s Really Big Show (hosted by Ellen DeGeneres), The Wayne Brady Show, That’s Incredible, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and NBC’s Ring In The New Year Holiday Special. They set the world record for the Human Chair Stack on FOX Network’s Guinness Book Primetime television show in 1999: they balanced six people precariously atop six chairs twenty-one feet up in the air without safety lines, astounding audiences with their bravery and dexterity. They were featured in Steven Soderbergh’s hit film Ocean’s Eleven playing alongside Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Poets and poetry lovers are invited to gather monthly at Whirligig Brewing in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to share food and words at a Poetry Potluck hosted by the brewery and Catamount Arts, as part of PoemTown St. Johnsbury. Poetry Potlucks will be held on the second Wednesday of each month, with the first one on September 14 from 7-9pm. Each gathering is hosted by a local poet.
All are welcome to bring poems or prose of their own or of others to read, or just come to listen and share food and conversation with other poetry lovers. There is no obligation to bring food, but participants are welcome to do so.
“Poets gathering to share their words and a meal creates an incredible experience, helping to build and strengthen bonds within the communities in which we are creating our art,” said poet Jen Hudgens. Whirligig Brewing owner and brewer Geoffrey Sewake added, "Whirligig is excited to support the community and the Arts. Hosting a monthly Poetry Potluck on the second Wednesday of the month is a perfect way for us to create fun spaces for creativity and energy in our Northeast Kingdom community."
Whirligig Brewing is a small one barrel nano brewery and taproom located in downtown St Johnsbury, utilizing local and regional grain and hops in the majority of their beers. They brew a wide variety of beer styles, including IPAs, lagers and stouts, but specialize in sours and wild ales. Whirligig Brewing is proudly BIPOC-owned.
PoemTown St. Johnsbury celebrates poetry in all forms and by all people, primarily during the month of April, which is National Poetry Month.

Yamato was founded by Masa Ogawa in 1993 in Nara, ‘the land of Yamato” which is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. Presently based in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, Yamato travels all over the word with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums, putting its very soul into the unusual instruments, whose sound stirs the hearts of people everywhere.
In the village of Asuka, a place with more than a thousand years of history and culture, Yamato seeks new expression with Wadaiko as its backbone. They think of the sound of the drums – made of animal skin and ancient trees, some of which are more than 400 years old – as a pulse or heartbeat (Shin-on), the center of life and the source of power which pulsates within the human body.
Like the strong and sturdy heartbeats of a lonely runner with a sleek and powerful body, Yamato attempts to create the energy of life, which envelops the audience and performers. What one feels when surrounded by the sound of Wadaiko, brought out by these highly trained performers, is what the Japanese call “Tamashy”, translated as soul, spirit, and psyche – the basic elements of life. It is something which is invisible and intangible but whose existence is certainly felt. The pulse, carried down from antiquity, will resonate within all the bodies gathered at any given performance.

This workshop will cover human pyramids, tumbling, juggling, acrobatics, and clowning. We recommend wearing clothes that are comfortable to move in, and bringing a water bottle. Come learn to flip, fall, and clown around with the artists of Cirque Us!

Originally produced in 2016, “One Man’s Trash” is back again in 2023 for its third national tour following the overwhelming success of its 2022 revival. With the limitless spirit and can-do attitude of the circus, this cast reanimates all that’s left in trash cans and littered in the garage to create an astonishing testament to the power of community and teamwork. Be it the pass of a juggling club or the leap of an acrobat, “One Man’s Trash” is ready to prove what we’re capable of--what we’re all capable of--together.
Since its founding in 2016, Cirque Us has rapidly grown into one of the most notable contemporary circus companies in the country. Its eight original company members quite literally stitched a show together with recycled materials and old car tires, culminating in the first tour of “One Man’s Trash” in 2016. Since then, Cirque Us has expanded to produce and tour original, full-length works year after year, alongside educational experiences such as camps, workshops, and other events for people of all ages and abilities. Confined to a living room, here is an intimate production with as many tableaus as travels, traditional songs and poetry, guided by the calls of migratory birds, craftspeople at their work, and imperturbable weather.
Nicolas Boulerice (founding member of Le Vent du Nord) and double bassist Frédéric Samson, join forces to bring you the mesmerizing show—Confiné aux voyages. This emotive work delivers magnificent laments woven together by contemplative soundscapes captured in Nicolas’ hometown of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu.
This encounter is an exploration and reflection of one’s place in the world, born of a territory and the sounds of a place in time, under the theme of travel, memory, and love. Nicolas and Frédéric invite the audience to travel alongside them through bare and revealing song cycles accompanied by double bass; still imagery and poetry; alongside birdsong, wind witches, or the engine of a boat. They carry with them traditional songs of centuries past made anew in a jazz setting. Confiné aux voyages offers a moment to listen to stories, reflect, and project oneself back into the present, an experience of infinity. This concert is inspired by the album Maison de pierres made during the first spring lockdown in Quebec, offering a truly special and immersive experience shared in a way that only Nicolas’ unmistakable voice can carry us.

This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening night and a performance towards the end of a run. Frayne gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Noises Off is a backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers and flying sardines!

Laura Lacroix loves to make things with her hands. She has practiced and taught in a wide range of media, including watercolor painting, making glass beads, wet and dry felting, painting hard shell gourds, and weaving with paper. Her favorite art form is always the one she is engaged with at the moment. Laura lives in East Charleston and never tires of Vermont’s beauty and serenity, a marvelous place for making art.

Six-time Grammy Award–winning composer Terence Blanchard brings his first opera to the Met after his Fire Shut Up in My Bones triumphantly premiered with the company to universal acclaim in 2021. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green is the young boxer Emile Griffith, who rises from obscurity to become a world champion, and bass-baritone Eric Owens portrays Griffith’s older self, haunted by the ghosts of his past. Soprano Latonia Moore is Emelda Griffith, the boxer’s estranged mother, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe is the bar owner Kathy Hagan. Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for Blanchard’s second Met premiere, also reuniting the director-and-choreographer team of James Robinson and Camille A. Brown.

A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias returns to his multi-ethnic Transylvanian village. This 2 part workshop will explore the basic elements of painting outdoors, or “en plein air” painting. Breaking it down into an easy format and working indoors at first, this workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate art enthusiasts of all ages. Make a painting in less than 2 hours while you learn color mixing, composition, and most of all, how to enjoy the outdoors and create art from life like an Impressionist. We’ll be working in water-soluble oils and acrylics. Some materials provided; we’ll send a supplies list to you after you register.

With a degree in fashion design and background as a dancer, Margaret Wiseheart Anderson has spent most of her professional career in the dance apparel industry and in designing costumes for professional theater and ballet companies. Primarily a self-taught artist, Margaret developed her skills as a landscape oil painter by painting from life. Co-coordinator of the Peace Valley Plein Air Painters for several years, she also founded a figurative study studio group in Pennsylvania, The Artist Collective #12. Now living in Vermont, Margaret is thrilled to explore the beauty of the Northeast Kingdom through paint, and to shape the next phase of her life as an artist.

Set in 1944, "The Farm Boy" is a black and white feature film. A love story and adventure, the film is loosely based on the real life story of the Director's parents. It is a story about trust, integrity, and standing behind your word. A story of a time when war took young boys away from their homes and returned them as heroes. The Farm Boy will stir your emotions and take you on a riveting adventure into the history of our past. The Farm Boy is a WWII era story about a young man who drives milk truck for his father. He meets a girl at a barn dance and eventually marries her. The day after, he leaves for Europe, to the Ardennes in Belgium, December, 1944. His mechanical experience from growing up on the farm comes in handy during what will become known as The Battle of the Bulge. As his unit heads north he is hit by enemy fire and left for dead. Filmed in black and white, using wide angle lenses and conventional camera techniques of that time period, The Farm Boy was filmed mostly on George Woodard’s farm in Waterbury Center Vermont. The film was produced by Joan Brace O’Neal. Roshni is born in Raogi village situated in the Upper Beas valley region of Kullu. She is a farmer who has her own apple orchard that she lovingly nurtures. She belongs to the Pahari culture of Himachal Pradesh and has grown up surrounded by pristine beauty, breathing clean air and prefers eating the food that is grown by her own hands for she finds it immensely satisfying. She is a young, energetic and exuberant woman who is in control of her life. Her husband Jaidev, a resident of Raogi village is a seeker and a poet with a desire to live a purposeful life.
ROSHNI means a ray of light. Within complete darkness when there enters a ray of light that is called ROSHNI. For the filmmakers, the journey of filming was one of discovery, being open, learning and following curiosity.

Catamount Arts is pleased to partner with Harrison Creative and Discover St Johnsbury to offer another Artwork and Product Photography weekend. Thanks to a USDA grant through Discover St Johnsbury, we are able to offer this service free of charge!
How it works: Have your artwork or product professionally photographed. We’re setting up a professional digital studio in Catamount Arts for the weekend! You’ll get a USB thumb drive containing high quality, color balanced digital images, suitable for both online and print reproduction.
What can you have photographed? Pretty much any 2D or 3D object, up to a maximum largest dimension of 8 feet.
How long does it take? We‘re scheduling sessions in 45 minute blocks. That’s enough time to photograph and process between 6 and 10 pieces, depending on size variations and complexity. Sessions start at 8:30am. Last session begins at 5pm.

One of opera’s most beloved works receives its first new Met staging in 19 years—a daring vision by renowned English director Simon McBurney that The Wall Street Journal declared “the best production I’ve ever witnessed of Mozart’s opera.” Nathalie Stutzmann conducts the Met Orchestra, with the pit raised to make the musicians visible to the audience and allow interaction with the cast. In his Met-debut staging, McBurney lets loose a volley of theatrical flourishes, incorporating projections, sound effects, and acrobatics to match the spectacle and drama of Mozart’s fable. The brilliant cast includes soprano Erin Morley as Pamina, tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Tamino, baritone Thomas Oliemans in his Met debut as Papageno, soprano Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night, and bass Stephen Milling as Sarastro.

The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. Once everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.
INTO THE WOODS is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
