Clemmons Family Farm and Catamount Arts are pleased to announce Afro-jazz singer/songwriter KeruBo, in St. Johnsbury, as part of the Facing the Sunrise Black Performing Arts Series. The series aims to engage audiences with stellar performances that celebrate and teach the Black Experience with positive and uplifting messages from the Black artist community. KeruBo is the first artist in the series and will appear at Catamount ArtPort on Saturday, March 12th, at 7pm.
Originally from Kenya and based now near Burlington, KeruBo has performed at festivals around the world for over two decades, blending African traditional music with influences including Brazilian samba/bossanova, jazz, and blues. KeruBo sings African folk music, Afro-pop, and Afro-jazz, ranging from traditional African laments to more modern arrangements that weave in storytelling. Her music is about healing, preserving African culture and heritage, and highlighting social issues affecting vulnerable minorities such as women and children.
The Facing the Sunrise Black Performing Arts Series is curated by Clemmons Family Farm, a leading Black-led nonprofit arts and culture organization in Vermont. Clemmons Family Farm supports a network of over 250 artists of African descent and is among the 2% of applicants to receive a prestigious National Creative Placemaking Grant from ArtPlace America. The organization is grounded in the 60-year-old legacy of Jack and Lydia Clemmons, co-owners of the 148-acre Clemmons Farm in Charlotte, in building community in Vermont around African-American and African diaspora arts and culture.
Clemmons Family Farm is partnering with Catamount Arts to promote greater racial equity in Vermont’s creative economy, collaborating to offer audiences increased access to members of Vermont’s African-American and African Diaspora Artists Network (VAAADAN). In addition to strengthening community through programming and education about African-American and African diaspora histories and culture, the collaboration will showcase the work of Vermont artists of African descent and model how Black-led and white-led arts and culture institutions can leverage their respective resources for the benefit of all patrons.
Admission to see KeruBo on Saturday, March 12th, at 7pm, at Catamount ArtPort in St. Johnsbury is free, but tickets are required to reserve seating. Compliance with Catamount’s COVID-19 safety protocol is required of all patrons, including children. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce. Only rabbis can legitimate a marriage or its dissolution. But this dissolution is only possible with full consent from the husband, who in the end has more power than the judges. Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabetz) has been applying for divorce for three years. But her husband Elisha (Simon Abkarian) will not agree. His cold intransigence, Viviane's determination to fight for her freedom, and the ambiguous role of the judges shape a procedure in which tragedy vies with absurdity, and everything is brought out for judgment, apart from the initial request.

Melt is a group of seven friends from New York City. Now in colleges around the Northeast, Melt unites on weekends to play highly energetic shows filled with dancing, funky horns, and jam sections that lead into catchy hooks. Planning to release their first EP this Fall, Melt is excited to take their sound across the country and grow their community along the way.
The band started in 2017 at the end of high school. Only weeks after they formed, Melt won a battle of the bands which they used to record and release their first single, “Sour Candy.” The song quickly went viral on Reddit and reached #5 on Billboard’s U.S. Viral 50 chart and #6 in Canada. Since then, Melt has continued to grow in unconventional ways, periodically releasing singles that they record in between semesters.
Driven simply by a love of what they do, each show is different from the last, keeping their passionate and label-defying fan base on their toes. Melt has repeatedly sold out shows in their hometown at venues Mercury Lounge and The Knitting Factory. Their distinctive sound has landed the band spots on a wide range of opening bills, notably for soul-pop band Lawrence and jam band Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. Melt has also played festivals around the country including Southwest Invasion (Austin, TX), the Rhode Island Music and Arts Festival, and the Pleasantville Music Festival (NY).
Melt is: Eric Dickstein (vocals, keys), Veronica Stewart-Frommer (lead vocals), MarloShankweiler (guitar), Josh Greenzeig (drums), Nick Sare (saxophone), Lucas Saur (bass), andAaron Alcouloumre (trumpet).

Directed by one of Israel's most celebrated directors (Eran Riklis), A Borrowed Identity delves into the life of a smart Arab youth and two Israeli teens he befriends at an elite boarding school in Jerusalem. With war waging in the background, the three navigate the landscape as teenagers do, with only a partial nod to reality and attention to social norms. The film, a semi-autobiographical screenplay by Arab-Israeli journalist Sayed Kashua, offers a powerful perspective on coexistence in the Middle East.

“‘Who do we sound like?’ That’s always the hardest question for us to answer” explains Michael Ricciardulli (guitar). “We have so many influences from so many different places. When it all falls together, we end up with songs that don’t sound like anyone else.”
Blending rock, pop, r&b, and hip-hop, Juice embraced the diversity of their signature sound early on. The band - Ben Stevens (vocals), Christian Rose (violin, vocals), Kamau Burton (vocals, acoustic guitar), Daniel Moss (guitar), Michael Ricciardulli (guitar), Rami El-Abidin (bass), and Miles Clyatt (drums) - formed in 2014 in Boston while attending college. After graduating, the band recorded and released their first professional EP, 2018’s Workin’ on Lovin’. With new music and two old minivans, the band hit the road for an almost non-stop year and a half of national touring.
Reflecting on their touring and coming to terms with a new phase of life, Juice gathered their collective experiences into their 2019 EP, you are simply magnificent. The project confronts difficult and powerful emotions, including loneliness, lost love, hopelessness and obsession.
Following the release of you are simply magnificent, Juice spent the remainder of 2019 living together as roommates in Queens, New York. Their upcoming single “DiCaprio (Love Me All the Time)” and accompanying video is authentic to that experience. The single features hooks and verses from five of the band members, and gathers inspiration from late ‘90s and early 2000’s pop and hip-hop.

Promoted as a family musical by Paramount Pictures, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is more of a black comedy, perversely faithful to the spirit of Roald Dahl's original book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) stages a contest by hiding five golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather (Jack Albertson). In the course of the tour, Willy Wonka punishes the four nastier children in various diabolical methods -- one kid is inflated and covered with blueberry dye, another ends up as a principal ingredient of the chocolate, and so on -- because these kids have violated the ethics of Wonka's factory. In the end, only Charlie and his grandfather are left. Ostensibly set in England, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was lensed in Germany (as revealed by the film's final overhead shot).

Working outside the confines of the traditional music industry, Adam Ezra and his bandmates – Corinna Smith (fiddle), Alex Martin (drums), Poche Ponce (bass) - built a community of fans through sheer grit and determination, regularly performing hundreds of shows a year for the past two decades without any major label or mainstream radio support. Fusing folk intimacy and rock energy with soul power and pop charm, the band first emerged from Boston in the early 2000s and quickly garnered widespread acclaim for their bold, insightful songwriting and interactive, euphoric performances. From hole in the wall bars and house concerts to sold-out headline shows and dates with the likes of Little Big Town, The Wallflowers, Gavin DeGraw, Train, and The Wailers, Ezra and his bandmates treated every single gig like their last, attracting a die-hard following that believed not just in the music, but in their commitment to activism and social change, as well.
After their tour was cancelled at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ezra brought the show online to continue this commitment and created The Gathering Series which to-date has reached a cumulative audience of 15 million viewers. In addition, they brought The Gathering Series to the real world as they performed over 100 safe, socially distanced shows in parks and backyards around the USA. The Adam Ezra Group hit their 500 th Live stream show on July 25 th , 2021, and although they don’t live-stream nightly anymore, they do still live-stream to the fans at least two times a week. AEG has also started to tour heavily again in traditional and outdoor venues. As if this wasn’t enough to keep them busy, the band also embarked on an ambitious new recording series dubbed ‘The Album Project’ which will see the band releasing at least 19 new singles over the next few years. What comes next for the Adam Ezra Group? The future is anyone’s guess right now, and the only thing the Adam Ezra Group knows for sure, is they’ll be out there making music however and whenever they can.

A young punk who thinks she knows it all. An old man who knows he doesn’t. They strike up a conversation. It becomes life changing. A deepening knowledge occurs as they walk the streets of LA. He is a Holocaust survivor; she a massage-parlor worker on the run and a holocaust denier, though he doesn’t hold any of that against her. Newcomer 14-year old Margot Josefsohn plays angry but stunningly naïve Casey, living from hand to mouth on the streets of LA fending off the frightening advances of men, having nowhere to go. She trusts no one. Samuel, played by the sublime (multiple Emmy Award-winning actor Ed Asner) trusts only a few. The two form an unexpected friendship, which gradually blossoms into a new family unit – him providing her the support and guidance that was lacking in her life, and her offering him the glimpse of the fatherhood that was torn from him many years prior.

Fire of Love tells the story of two French lovers, Katia and Maurice Krafft, who died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unraveling the mysteries of our planet, while simultaneously capturing the most explosive volcano imagery ever recorded. Along the way, they changed our understanding of the natural world, and saved tens of thousands of lives. Previously unseen hours of pristine 16-millimeter film and thousands of photographs reveal the birth of modern volcanology through an unlikely lens -- the love of its two pioneers.

For nearly 40 years, two- time GRAMMY award winning Terrance Simien and 8th generation Louisiana Creole, has been shattering the myths about what his indigenous Zydeco roots music is – and is not. It most certainly is American roots music and it is music born of the black and mixed race French speaking Creoles of South Louisiana. It’s exhilarating and as complex and diverse as the Creoles. It’s also more than just one rhythm and one tempo. Sure it’s about dancing; less dancing please said no-one ever! But, it’s also about grooving in place and dancing freely. And yes indeed, it also about vocal performances – Terrance’s lead vocals and the stunning three part harmonies of him, Danny and Stan – are proof that the vocal performance matters in all genres. Finally, it is most definitely dynamic and evolving. The late, Dr. John and Terrance’s friend/hero, once told him “if the music ain’t changin, it’s dyin.” We could not agree with you more, Mac!
Simien leads a massively skilled Zydeco Experience band with long time member and creative collaborator Danny Williams (30+ years, two-GRAMMY award winning), keyboards; Stan Chambers (10+ years, GRAMMY award winning), bass; Ian Molinaro – Thompson, drums; and our newest members, Revon Andrews, trombone and Orlando Gilbert, saxophone. Both Ian and Orlando are Berklee College graduates. Two Berklee grads in one zydeco band; definitely a first for this genre! We could not be more honored that they chose this genre and this group.
Simien has become one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American roots music today. He and his band mates have performed over 10,000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 45 countries during their eventful career.

By Edmond Rostand, in a new version by Martin Crimp
Directed by Jamie Lloyd
James McAvoy (X-Men, Atonement) returns to the stage in an inventive adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, captured live in 2020 from the West End in London.
Fierce with a pen and notorious in combat, Cyrano almost has it all - if only he could win the heart of his true love Roxane. There’s just one big problem: he has a nose as huge as his heart. Will a society engulfed by narcissism get the better of Cyrano - or can his mastery of language set Roxane’s world alight?
Edmond Rostand’s masterwork is adapted by Martin Crimp, with direction by Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal). This classic play will be brought to life with linguistic ingenuity to celebrate Cyrano’s powerful and resonant resistance against overwhelming odds.

Mark Strong in a Romanian black comedy about a commie-baiting bank heist? Closer To The Moon is a curiosity, no doubt — but also a delight. The ever-excellent British actor leads a gang of disillusioned former World War II resistance fighters in a futile fxxx-you to the powers-that-be in 1959 Romania. The twist is that when they are caught, the authorities force them to re-enact events for a propaganda film, under the innocent eye of cameraman Harry Lloyd (charming). A strong ensemble embrace the absurdity with gusto. And writer/director Nae Caranfil’s unlikely, odd little film is quietly moving — all the more so because it is true.A provocative, darkly comedic, absurdist drama - based on a true story. – Susan Granger, SSG Syndicate

Moorea Masa & Mood’s new album “Heart In The Wild: Side A” is an exquisite and heart-wrenching journey through Masa’s relationship with her estranged mother, a queer Black woman suffering from debilitating mental illness. Written and produced against a backdrop of global anguish and civil unrest in 2020, this record captures an unflinching intimacy that feels like sharing sacred moments with a lifelong friend. Masa delivers exquisitely emotional vocal performances, directly addressing her mother in warm, velvety tones accompanied by lush beds of harmonies and dreamlike textures. These are songs that reflect the personal qualities that Masa embodies. “Lion” shows her fierce loyalty and desire to protect women and other marginalized folks, “Butterfly” expresses her transcendent and transformative nature, and “Until Then” is a diary of loving someone no matter if they’re mentally able to truly love you back.
This EP is the first side of an upcoming full-length LP. Throughout the release process Moorea Masa & The Mood have been collaborating with mental health organizations who specifically are supporting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folx.
Moorea has toured the world and shared a stage with artists k.d Lang, Allen Stone, Big Wild, Rachael Price (Lake Street Dive) The Motet, Nick Waterhouse, headlined tours in Europe, and supported other artists including Corrine Bailey Rae, Emily King, Lawrence, Bernhoft and more.

A new play by David Hare, directed by Nicholas Hytner.
Ralph Fiennes (Antony & Cleopatra) leads the cast in David Hare’s (Skylight) blazing account of the most powerful man in New York, a master manipulator whose legacy changed the city forever.
For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors.
Faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become, will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction?
Broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre in London, Nicholas Hytner directs this exhilarating new play.

Led by songwriters Isaac Horn (guitar) and Lincoln Mick (mandolin), and with the support of Erik Coveney on bass and Bailey Warren on fiddle, The Arcadian Wild confidently inhabits and explores an intersection of genre, blending the traditional with the contemporary in order to create a unique acoustic sound that is simultaneously unified and diverse. With one foot planted firmly in choral and formal vocal music, and the other in progressive folk and bluegrass, the band offers up songs of invitation: calls to come and see, to find refuge and rest, or to journey and wonder.
Over the course of 2020, The Arcadian Wild released Principium, a four-movement song-cycle that explores human relationship, flourishing, degradation, and redemption. To help tell this story, the band has collaborated with filmmaker Greyson Welch to create a series of short films to accompany this unique project. The project culminated in the release of the Principium EP in February 2021, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart.

The sound of Bendigo Fletcher begins with the poetry that informs it. With songwriter Ryan Anderson’s rangy, howling vocals as bedrock, the band’s creation floats between pop and folk-rock textures, unconventional structure, and wordplay as a feeling that functions free from a confined form and culverts beyond the comfort zone of Americana. Anderson writes of intimate moments; revelations that occur on rhythmic steps through the woods; reflections on love and relationships. The songs are anecdotes, told not in the service of some grand moral conclusion, but as heady little hints at both the absurdity of the world and the awkward rewards of our living in it. Like a robin in the rafters or a couch in the garage.

By Philip Pullman, adapted by Bryony Lavery, directed by Nicholas Hytner
Set twelve years before the epic His Dark Materials trilogy, this gripping adaptation revisits Philip Pullman’s fantastical world in which waters are rising and storms are brewing.
Two young people and their dæmons, with everything at stake, find themselves at the centre of a terrifying manhunt. In their care is a tiny child called Lyra Belacqua, and in that child lies the fate of the future. And as the waters rise around them, powerful adversaries conspire for mastery of Dust: salvation to some, the source of infinite corruption to others.
Eighteen years after his ground breaking production of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, director Nicholas Hytner returns to Pullman’s parallel universe. Broadcast live from London’s Bridge Theatre.
