St. Patrick's Day Fundraising Dinner
Traditional Irish Meal by Roland Riendeau, Jericho Deli
Wednesday, March 13, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Location:
St. Kieran Community Center for the Arts
155 Emery St.
Berlin, NH
Tickets: $25.00 per plate
Plans for the St. Kieran’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner are underway. This dinner with raffle and silent auction serves as a major fundraiser which supports the art center’s mission to foster the development of the arts in the Androscoggin Valley area and preserve the St. Kieran historic building located in what was previously referred to as “Irish Acres.”
The main hall of the Arts Center, located at 155 Emery Street, Berlin, NH, will be transformed into a beautiful dining space on Wednesday, March 13th. Back by popular demand (and taste bud excitement), Roland Riendeau of Jericho Deli will be preparing a traditional Irish meal and the raffle and silent auction items will be on display, ready for your chance to win! Our many supportive and generous business partners have donated an array of items to make this year’s fundraising raffle and silent auction worthwhile. We are looking forward to great food, old and new friends and a profitable fundraising effort to help us keep the center alive and kicking.
The doors will open at 5:00 with Executive Director remarks at 5:30 and a plan to serve dinner at 6:00 p.m. Advanced sale tickets for this event are $25.00 and are available at the arts center office or on line at www.stkieranarts.org (performance series/events link). A very limited number of $30 tickets will be available at the door on the evening of the event. Please call or visit to reserve space for yourself and your dinner buddies!
There you have it; the perfect excuse to get out of the house for a bit. Come and see for yourself what a gem we have in our midst and support the arts in the North Country.

Three desperate souls must fight their way out of a dead-end world in this bracing, gut-punching glimpse into America’s dark underbelly. Earl (Jamie Bell) is a struggling ex-marine and father determined to make a better life for his family—no matter what it takes. Angus (Frank Grillo) is a violent, unhinged drug dealer who leaves a trail of death and destruction in his wake. And Delia (Margaret Qualley) is a haunted woman who will do anything to escape a life of crime she can no longer bear. In their kill-or-be-killed world, all roads lead to the Donnybrook: an illicit backwoods cage match where bare-knuckled fighters brawl for a shot at a $100,000 prize. It’s either a last-ditch chance at redemption—or a death sentence. After the acclaimed Sundance hit, Dark Knight, director Tim Sutton comes back with a mesmerizing, visceral vision of life that blends unflinching brutality with dreamlike lyricism.

George is a middle-aged professor of history at New Carthage and Martha, his wife, is the daughter of the college president. When Nick and Honey arrive for a nightcap after the faculty soiree, they have no idea of the games, twists and turns that the evening holds in store.
As the night goes on and the drinks keep coming, George and Martha take on their guests – and each other – as ripostes and rejoinders turn into affronts and abuse. Harrowing secrets are laid bare and innermost vulnerabilities are exposed. Which couple really has the relationship rooted in honesty and which has a marriage built upon lies? In this wickedly funny play, comedy and tragedy intertwine to create an unforgettable evening.
Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf won the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play and is considered one of the masterworks of American drama, with its dazzling language and unforgettable characters.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? will be directed by Upstage Managing Artistic Director, Andrew Lidestri.
The White Mountain School Theatre is unfortunately not incredibly handicapped accessible meaning there is no ramp into the space. The main door has two large steps up and all seating except the front two rows require the use of stairs. There is a way in through the back of the theatre that only requires use of one stair and we are happy to make accommodations as needed to help people access this exciting show. Please call 323-397-8652 and speak to Andrew Lidestri with any additional questions or to request accomodations. Thank you.

Take a fresh look at Van Gogh through the legacy of the greatest private collector of the Dutch artist's work: Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939), one of the first to recognize the genius of Van Gogh. In the early 20th century, Kröller-Müller amassed nearly 300 of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings now housed at her namesake museum in Holland.
The Basilica Palladina exhibition in Vicenza, "Amid Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies," with 40 paintings and 85 drawings on loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum, lends the basis of this program, revealing Van Gogh's art and his genius, while allowing audiences to understand the importance of drawing as part of his craft.
Van Gogh's seemingly instinctive canvases were the result of long, preparatory studies very rarely exhibited - not just sketches but stunning works of art in and of themselves, where the broken flow of lines that characterize the style and strokes in Van Gogh's paintings can already be seen.

Party like a Celt with Prydein & CPB. This performance will be the most high energy, calorie crushing, thirst quenching, Irish gig put on by a Scottish Pipe Band that ever was! Hosted by the brilliant Burke Mountain Hotel. Produced and presented by Catamount Film and Arts.
Step 1: Begin with 1/2 oz of Prydein
Call it what you will, celtic-rock, kilt-rock, bagpipe-rock, Scottish-rock or, our favourite, Sham-rock, two things are a constant, Prydein is a rock band that just happens to use the Great Highland Bagpipe of Scotland instead of a Gibson Les Paul coupled with a Marshall Stack which goes "to 11".Often compared to AC/DC on Guinness and Whisky, Prydein gives a high-energy performance loved by young and old.
Step 2: Add 3 dashes of Catamount Pipe Band
Vermont’s premier Scottish bagpipe band is an intergenerational organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Celtic music, tradition, and culture. A competitive band at heart, Catamount Pipe Band is currently the 2018 Northeastern Pipe Band Champion. CPB appeared on the Glasgow green in Scotland this past August for their fourth time as competitors in the World Pipe Band Championships. When not competing....The pipe band is well known for its Celtic "variety show" where audiences will hear tunes from Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, and more. Shows include several types of traditional instruments fused with an undercurrent of modern percussion giving the music a unique hypnotic feel. The Catamounts are well known in the circuit as a talented, edgy, and sometimes brazen bunch. Wherever they go, a ceilidh is sure to follow!
Step 3: Garnish with zest: Heather Morris Highland & Irish Dancers
Green Mountain Performing Arts is a non-profit dance and performing arts organization offering a variety of classes from Hip Hop and Musical Theater to Ballet and Celtic. www.greenmountainperformingarts.org
Step 4: Grab a burger at the View Pub or some other fine pairing and drink up!
Celebrate safely by staying the night a Burke Mountain Hotel, or please arrange for a designated driver.

Art Journaling is a process for creating small but rich visual statements within a sketchbook, an old book modified, or a formal blank art journal. The methods involved are a lot of fun. If you don’t already have an artist’s eye for this sort of project, you will develop one in the workshops. Art journal pages can be intimate and personal or they can be public statements for all to see, or something somewhere in between. They can be made up of textures or images, or they can be covered with words. Or all of the above.
This series of three two-hour workshops will give you hands-on experience. You may enroll in one or two or all three. Beginners would be wise to come to the first session.
Session One - February 16, 10am-noon
How to:
- Choose products or ingredients for art journaling (we’ll go over five essentials)
- Learn about the elements of a successful art journal page (Foolproof tricks)
- Prepare a substrate or base
- Experiment with collage and de-collage
- Blend acrylics on the page
Session Two - March 23, 10am-noon
How to:
- Round up amazing supplies in your own apartment or house
- Get inspiration from art journal prompts
- Build up layers with various materials (so that they stick!)
- Allow a series of layers to show through on your page
Session Three - April 13, 10am-noon
How to:
- Handle extra supplies that are great additions to your stash
- Use existing illustrations or create your own
- Manage writing or lettering on an art journal page (easier than you think)
- Construct closures, add-ons and envelopes
General supplies will be provided. Bring your own journaling sketchbook, an old hardbound book in decent condition (5 inches by 7 inches or a bit larger), or a proper art journal (available at The Frame Dames or online).
Workshop Fee: $25 each, or $60 for all three (10% discount for Catamount Arts members and students)
Parents of high school students: After registering for workshop(s), please complete an enrollment form HERE.
Sharon Kenney Biddle has been teaching bookbinding and related crafts for more than seventeen years. She believes that old-fashioned paper-filled books, especially ones that we make ourselves, are not obsolete or irrelevant. Designing a book and building its contents are worthy, satisfying experiences. A book that is entirely one's own from cover to cover is a splendid example of imagination and careful craftsmanship.

Written two centuries ago in 1818 by Mary Shelley, FRANKENSTEIN: The Modern Prometheus, is the first true science fiction novel. Years ahead of its time, the story has since become the inspiration for countless film and stage adaptations.
Frankenstein is a living, breathing, gruesome outcome of scientific discovery. The piece raises an important universal question about the nature of innovation- just because it can be done, should it be done?
Victor Frankenstein is a Swiss scientist with a mission to create an artificial human. Without considering the consequences of such progress, he succeeds with terrifying results. After wandering the world alone, the monster eventually comes for Frankenstein’s family. Horrific events unfold until the doctor tentatively agrees to create a mate for the creature. Ultimately, the doctor refuses in an effort to spare humanity but bears the terrible and personal penalties of his decision.
Two hundred years later, Frankenstein still poses a myriad of critical ethical questions. Aquila Theatre’s production of this timeless classic will be bold and thrilling – while paying homage to the original writing of Mary Shelley.

Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara (aka Fatou) was born of Malian parents in the Ivory Coast in 1982. As a child she became a member of her father's dance troupe and was a popular performer of the wildly flailing didadi dance from Wassoulou, her ancestral home in western Mali. She was an energetic and headstrong girl and at the age of twelve her refusal to go to school finally prompted her parents to send her to live and be disciplined by an aunt in Bamako. She was not to see her parents again for more than a decade.
Off on her own, Fatou discovered acting and performed in 11 films, including “Timbuktu,” which played Cannes and was nominated for the 2014 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The NY Times ranked it 12th on its 2017 list of “the best films of the 21st century, so far.”
Fatou also performed a variety of roles on stage, around the world, including tours in Vietnam, Mexico and throughout Europe. During rehearsals and quiet moments she took to singing backstage for her own amusement. She was overheard by a director and was soon singing solo during the company's performances. Encouraged by the audience reception, she began to sing in Parisian clubs and cafes during breaks from touring.
Audiences, critics, and producers immediately responded to her exceptional talent and before long she was touring and recording albums, including 'Seya' the GRAMMY nominated-album by Mali's star Oumou Sangaré and 'Red Earth' the GRAMMY-winning Malian project by celebrated American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater. When each of these albums were released Fatou toured worldwide as singer and dancer with both projects.
On her return to France, Fatou took the role of Karaba in the popular touring musical 'Kirikou and Karaba'. She was encouraged to take the role by her friend Rokia Traore who also inspired her to take up the guitar: "To me it was a wonderful and daring thing: a Malian girl with an acoustic guitar. Why should the guitar be only for men?"
Fatou bought herself a guitar and started to teach herself, and at the same time began to write down her own compositions. Fatoumata’s EP ‘Kanou’ was released in May 2011, followed by her debut full length album ‘Fatou’ in September 2011, to much critical acclaim. The album was awarded No.1 album 2011 on the world music charts, where it remained for 6 months. It was also given No.1 in several end-of-year album polls including The Times of London and Mojo.
Fatoumata Diawara continues to make waves around the world for her multiple talents. In addition to performing with the legendary Dee Dee Bridgewater, Fatoumata has also performed with Herbie Hancock and Paul McCartney, among many others.
“Classy, powerful, soulful and expressive” – London Guardian
“Fatoumata Diawara's know-how, musicality, and sense of self all come together, and prove her to be one of the most dynamic voices in Afropop today.” -- Pop Matters

Since its founding as a mixed voice choir in 1971, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge has gained an international reputation as one of the leading university choral groups in the world. In addition to its primary function of leading services three times a week in the College chapel, the choir keeps an active schedule recording, broadcasting, and performing throughout the UK and the world.
Under the direction of internationally acclaimed composer and conductor Graham Ross, the choir has toured widely, including in Europe, the United States, Japan, China, Russia, and the Middle East. In 2000 it became the first Oxbridge mixed choir to perform at the BBC Proms, singing Bach’s St John Passion.
We’ve hosted the Choir of Clare College on two previous occasions – and we’re very pleased to welcome them back, this time performing classical and contemporary choral music.

Gillian Anderson (X-Files, NT Live: A Streetcar Named Desire) and Lily James (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) lead in All About Eve, broadcast live to cinemas from the West End in London.
All About Eve tells the story of Margo Channing. Legend. True star of the theatre. The spotlight is hers, always has been. But now there’s Eve. Her biggest fan. Young, beautiful Eve. The golden girl, the girl next door. But you know all about Eve…don’t you…?
Lifting the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition, this new production, from one of the world's most innovative theatre directors, Ivo van Hove (NT Live: A View from the Bridge), asks why our fascination with celebrity, youth and identity never seems to get old.
All About Eve is adapted by Ivo van Hove from the 1950 Twentieth Century Fox film by Joseph L Mankiewicz and the play “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr. Ivo van Hove directs this new stage version with set and lighting design from Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D’Huys and music from double Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey, alongside Tom Gibbons’ sound design. Casting is by Julia Horan CDG.

Klimt & Schiele: Eros and Psyche, recounts the start of the Vienna Secession, a magical art movement formed in the late 1890's for art, literature and music, in which new ideas are circulated, Freud discovers the drives of the psyche, and women begin to claim their independence. It was a movement that marked a new era outside the confines of academic tradition.
At the heart of Secession were artists Gustav Klimt and his protégé and dear friend Egon Schiele. This exhibition proves an in-depth examination of images of extraordinary visual power: from the eroticism of Klimt's mosaic-like works, to the anguished and raw work of the young Schiele in his magnetic nudes and contorted figures against the backdrop of nocturnal Vienna, full of masked balls and dreams imbued with sexuality.

Music by Jeanine Teasori
Book & Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire
"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.
Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.
Shrek the Musical is directed by the Upstage Managing Artistic Director, Andrew Lidestri and choreography by Lidestri & Madalyn Sheehy

PAT METHENY was born in Kansas City into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility – a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. METHENY’S versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.
As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez’s PM-100 jazz guitar, and a variety of other custom instruments. He took the whole instrument development process into a different level with his mechanical, solenoid driven Orchestrion.
It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards, including three gold records for Still Life (Talking), Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards in 12 different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition. The Pat Metheny Group won an unprecedented seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums. Metheny has spent most of his life on tour, averaging between 120-240 shows a year since 1974. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

Based on the novel by Andrea Levy
Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel Small Island comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation. Experience the play in cinemas, filmed live on stage as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday.
Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury, England.
The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK.
A company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in London in this timely and moving story.

The Capitol Steps are a troupe of Congressional staffers-turned-comedians who travel the States satirizing the very people and places that once employed them. The Steps perform over 500 shows a year all over the country.
The Capitol Steps were born December, 1981 when three staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin! So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor that was as popular in Peoria as it was on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began, so co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers! Most cast members have worked on Capitol Hill, some for Democrats, some for Republicans, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence. No matter who holds office, there’s never a shortage of material. Says Elaina Newport, “Typically, the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That’s what we call a two-party system.”
Although the Capitol Steps are based in Washington, DC most of their shows are out-of-town or for out-of-town audiences. Whether it’s the National Welding Supply Association, a University audience, high schoolers, or State Legislators, people love to laugh at the foibles of Jerry Falwell (“Loonies of the Right”) or even Bill Clinton’s new office (“In the Ghetto”). In fact, the Capitol Steps have performed for the last five presidents (six if you include Hillary). The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from the politicians and personalities who are NOT included in the program!

The youngest of fourteen children, born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, Iris DeMent spent her childhood immersed in gospel and traditional country music. Beginning with her 1992 debut, ‘Infamous Angel,’ which was hailed as “an essential album of the 1990’s” by Rolling Stone, Iris DeMent released a series of stellar records that established her as “one of the finest singer-songwriters in America” according to The Guardian. The music earned her multiple Grammy nominations, as well as the respect of peers like John Prine, Steve Earle, and Emmylou Harris, who all invited her to collaborate. Merle Haggard dubbed her “the best singer I’ve ever heard” and asked her to join his touring band, and David Byrne and Natalie Merchant famously covered her “Let The Mystery Be” as a duet on MTV Unplugged. NPR called her “one of the great voices in contemporary popular music” and The Boston Globe to hail her work as “a work of rare, unvarnished grace and power.”
“Iris DeMent makes music that celebrates humanity’s efforts toward salvation, while acknowledging that most of our time on Earth is spent reconciling with the fact that we don’t feel so redeemed. Grounded in hymns, early country songs, gospel and folk, DeMent’s work is treasured by those who know it for its insight and unabashed beauty.” —NPR
