Tuesdays, April 25, May 2 and May 9, 6-8 pm
Location: Catamount Outback Artspace
Instructor: Sharon Kenney Biddle
Participants will be creating a hard cover blank book. The two-part binding process involves sewing together the cover boards in a puzzle-like weave, and binding the inside pages by attaching them to the cover. This book uses the dramatic-looking sewing as the centerpiece of its design. Because the pages lie flat, the book is ideal as a travel journal, a garden journal or a sketchbook. All materials and supplies will be provided as well as written directions for the Secret Belgian Binding for each participant to take home.
Class fee: $60. 10% discount for Catamount Arts Members and high school students.High school students should complete the enrollment form after purchasing.
Materials fee of $8 due to the instructor at first class. Limit of 8 participants. Registration deadline is April 21.
Sharon Biddle has been teaching bookbinding for twenty years. She believes that old-fashioned paper-filled books, especially ones that we make ourselves, are not obsolete or irrelevant. Designing a book and building its contents are worthy, satisfying experiences. A well-made book that is entirely one’s own from cover to cover is a valuable example of imagination and careful craftsmanship.
