Vermont’s own trad roots power trio, Pete’s Posse, is composed of acclaimed musician Pete Sutherland (fiddle, piano, banjo, melodica and vocals), his talented protégé Oliver Scanlon (fiddle, viola, mandolin, foot percussion and vocals) and the uber-dynamic Tristan Henderson (guitars, mandolin, jaw harp, foot percussion and vocals). Pete’s Posse is three generations of musicians who have come together to create their own electrifying sound they call “multi-generational roots music.” The steady flow of powerful uplifting energy across the age gap is the engine that drives Pete’s Posse, and it shows no sign of letting up!

Dynamic duo Mary Jane Austin, piano, Erik Kroncke, bass vocalist team up with dancer Christine Harris to present Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death. Mary Jane Austin enjoys a rich musical life in Vermont and abroad, where her interests range from recital work and full scale opera productions to conducting children’s choruses and teaching elementary violin. Erik Kroncke’s unique bass voice has been in demand by opera companies and orchestras all over the world. Christine Harris is the director of Moving Light Dance School and Company. She has choreographed and/or performed for many local community events. She teaches creative movement, ballet and modern classes. Songs and Dances of Death is a song cycle for voice and piano by Modest Mussorgsky, written in the mid-1870s, to poems by Arseny Golenishchev-Kutuzov, a relative of the composer. Each song deals with experiences of death (child death, death in youth, drunken misadventure and war.) The song cycle is considered Mussorgsky's masterpiece in the genre.

After Diane’s rousingly successful solo recital at the OH last year, we asked her to come back…with friends. She will perform by herself, with a violinist, singer and more. “A pianist in the grand Romantic tradition; mature, highly nuanced with a gorgeous sound of ‘black velvet,’ Huling mesmerizes her audiences from the first note. Her sound ranges from ethereal to thundering, and is stunning in the depth of emotion and expression. She also creates cutting-edge programs, including music of living composers - even premiering her own award-winning compositions.”

Can you imagine an all Mozart program played on a Mozart era fortepiano, modeled after a Viennese instrument from 1795, interspersed with readings of letters from Mozart and his father by acclaimed author and Calais resident, M.T. Anderson? Sylvia Berry is one of North America’s leading exponents of the fortepiano as well as other historical keyboard instruments. This is the kind of concert you usually have to travel to Boston or Montreal to hear. Instead just come on over to Plainfield! A rare treat to be sure.

Plainfield’s own Court-style Javanese Gamelan returns to the OH for a concert of traditional Indonesian music as well as contemporary compositions written for the ensemble. Javanese Gamelan is a group - or orchestra - of about 30 instruments ranging from huge gongs to tiny flutes with lots of xylophone and kettle type instruments in between. Gamelan has a long history in central Vermont, going back to the late 1960’s when Dennis Murphy built the first gamelan anywhere in the world outside of Java at Goddard College. Gamelan Sulukala (named in honor of a Murphy composition) was purchased anonymously for Goddard in the 90’s. Made in Java, it is a full complement of instruments fashioned from bronze and iron. The current ensemble consists of 16 members who range in age from their teens to 70’s with every decade in-between represented.
