“Fiercely beautiful and bravely, utterly exposed.” – NPR

An eight-member ensemble dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice, Roomful of Teeth is an insatiable musical force to be reckoned with. For their Highland Center for the Arts debut on Monday July 3, 2017 at 7:00pm, the ensemble will perform a full program that includes Partita for 8 Voices, a vocal composition by 34-year-old American composer and Roomful of Teeth vocalist, Caroline Shaw. The piece won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013, making Shaw the youngest recipient of the award to date.

Roomful of Teeth is a GRAMMY-winning vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice with a borderless repertoire encompassing singing traditions from around the world. The New York-based a cappella octet produces sounds that range “from mere whispers to moments of unearthly beauty” (The Seattle Times). Trained by vocal masters from across the globe, Roomful of Teeth is both masterful and innovative. With a style range that spans Tuvan throat singing, Broadway belting, Persian classical, and Death Metal growl, the group’s vocal acrobatics are tempered with exquisite technique and moving creativity. This experimental group continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques, making them one of today’s most impressive new vocal ensembles.

By William Shakespeare
Directed by Craig Johnson

Join us for Highland Center for the Arts inaugural theater production — William Shakespeare’s beguiling comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Funny, physical, romantic, delightful, magical, and touching on the very human follies and fun of falling in love, this community/professional collaboration will involve professional actors and production staff and community members working together to create a truly extraordinary experience. Set in an enchanted forest in the days surrounding the Duke of Athens’ wedding, sparring lovers and a group of amateur actors become entangled in a battle between the King and Queen of the fairies. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a story of order and disorder, reality and appearance, and love and marriage, and proves that the course of love never does run smooth. Filled with magic, royal battles, fools in love, and bumbling buffoons, this dream is extremely accessible to the old and young alike.
