Classical Guitarist Steven Hancoff, described as “an interpretive master who plays with fluidity, grace and passion” by Jazz Review Magazine, will be presenting his Bach Project at St. Kieran Community Center for the Arts on Sunday, June 4, 2017 starting at 2:00 pm. Mr. Hancoff will be tracing Bach’s life in a music performance entitled: From Obscurity to Eminence. Tickets for the performance are available on line (www.stkieranarts.org) via the performance series link, at the center office (155 Emery Street, Berlin) or at the door on the afternoon of the show.

The project, a transcription and recording of the Six Suites for Cello Solos, transforms each of the 36 movements – six pieces of music in each of six suites – into music for the guitar. Transcription is not merely the transferring of notes from one instrument to another. Transcription here is the art of creating a piece of guitar music out of a piece of cello music. One of the central issues was transcribing music written for an instrument that typically plays one note at a time (cello) to one that is capable of playing separate, concurrent melodic lines and chords (guitar). Transcription ultimately means harmonizing the Bach Cello Suites. In order to successfully transcribe these solos, Mr. Hancoff familiarized himself with the life of Bach; gaining a deepened understanding of who he was to better organize the project.

Mr. Hancoff toured the world – about 50 countries – as an official Artistic Ambassador representing the United States of America. The concerts – the music and the story of the great American music tradition, woven together with tales of the men and women who created it – have captivated audiences everywhere. Now, after years of intense devotion, his four-volume eBook – Bach, Casals & the Six Suites for Cello Solo, is complete.

Mr. Hancoff, a graduate of St. John’s College (esteemed for its singular “One Hundred Great Books of the Western World” program), is not only a musician/transcriptionist/arranger, but also has been a Rolfer™, a form of bodywork that reorganizes the connective tissues, called fascia, that permeate the entire body for more than 30 years and a proud member of the Grand Canyon River Guides Association.
