Blending folk, bluegrass, country, and Americana influences, Sarah Jarosz’s songs employ an understated elegance that evokes intimacy and simplicity. An expert player on mandolin, guitar, and clawhammer banjo, Sarah Jarosz’s singing and songwriting is often compared to Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Karris, Beth Orton, Gillian Welch, and early Simon and Garfunkel. But, at just 26 years old, she is a fiercely original talent who, since earning two 2017 Grammy Awards, has emerged as a ground-breaking talent.

The Austin (Texas) Chronicle’s Jim Caligiuri declared, "For Austinites who've followed her since her early teens, the fact that Wimberley native Sarah Jarosz blossomed into one of the most stirring musicians of her generation comes as absolutely no surprise.”

NPR’s Katie Presley made note of Jarosz’s musical maturity, praising her “uncharacteristically (and deliciously) unyielding” vocal carriage.

The Wall Street Journal adds, “She refuses to dilute the raw sentiments with gloss or misdirection…her songs are direct, unadorned and thoroughly beautiful.”

Jarosz ended 2016 and began 2017 building on her previous successes in the UK and Ireland, including sold out shows at Union Chapel in London and City Halls in Glasgow. She also continues to make frequent appearances on the new A Prairie Home Companion, whose host, Chris Thile calls her “the silver voiced, silver fingered, silver penned Sarah Jarosz.”

Opening Act: 10-String Symphony

The fast-rising Nashville duo, 10 String Symphony, began as a partnership of mutual admiration­­ a much needed creative release valve for Rachel Bairman and Christian Sedelmyer, two 5­-string fiddle players and veteran sidemen of Nashville’s music scene. Rachel, a former Illinois state fiddle champion in the old time tradition, needed an outlet for the new sort of songs she was writing, while Christian, originally a classically trained violinist, now a current touring member of the Jerry Douglas Band, was looking to get in touch the impetuous spirit of the rock bands he played in before his arrival in Nashville. With the love of the 5­-string fiddle and its musical possibilities as its focal point, the band’s mission statement was as clear as it was expansive: Two fiddles. Two Voices. Epic music. 10-String Symphony is a band striving to maintain the purity of purpose of the American old­time tradition, while simultaneously stretching its limitations with unique arrangements, unflinchingly personal lyrics, and a bravely progressive melodic palette.

Jane Austen is one of the most popular and beloved authors of all time. Born in the late 18th century, she wrote with great insight and wit about the lives of the English upper middle class. Her characters seem to drift through the inescapable life of leisure that only privilege can afford, yet they are forever negotiating the reality of birthright and custom.

Sense & Sensibilty is one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels. The characters live in a world in which choices are limited - especially for the women. The story revolves around the lives of two sisters, Elinor who is level-headed and full of sense, and the hopelessly romantic, Marianne. After the untimely and unexpected death of their father, both sisters and their mother are forced to leave their comfortable lives, while their half-brother and his wife inherit the family estate. The only hope for these two sisters is a profitable marriage. Seduction, courtship, love, heartbreak and surprise abound in this classic romantic comedy.

Aquila expands the canon of classical works for the stage by adapting Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility in a bold and exciting new production. Directed by Aquila’s artistic director Desiree Sanchez, this production will incorporate her innovative use of space, movement, design, and sound. D.C. Metro said “Sanchez is wildly inventive, and the production choices made were carried out beautifully.” NY Theater Review says “her direction is polished and laser sharp. She gets the maximum amount of potential out of every stage moment, has exceptional attention to detail, and is a master of direction.”

An evening of seasonal music – and plenty more!

The entertainment world is filled with extraordinary stories. But few match the beguiling true-life tale of Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, Canada’s reigning couple of Celtic music, whose dazzling career achievements underpin an incomparable off-stage life.

Indeed, when two of the planet’s very best fiddle players married in 2002, the proverbial mantelpiece was instantly crammed with JUNO and East Coast Music Awards. Though MacMaster and Leahy followed different trajectories—she a Cape Breton native who could step-dance before she could walk; he the oldest brother of acclaimed family group Leahy—both had assuredly crested the traditional music peak.

Their first recorded collaboration, 2015’s “One,“ which was followed by 2016’s “A Celtic Family Christmas” (and which cemented the couple’s status as powerhouses on the seasonal circuit) confirmed MacMaster and Leahy were as dynamic working together as they were working apart.

That’s no small feat when your combined album sales exceed one million; when past collaborators include classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma, bluegrass star Alison Krauss and banjo ace Béla Fleck; and when your ecstatic fan base (which boasts Shania Twain and The Chieftains) stretches from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Sydney, Australia.

“The fiddle was definitely common ground for us when we first got together,” MacMaster, recalls with a chuckle. “But I was so in awe of Donnell’s family, of 11 siblings who could play and had a family band. And here I am now doing almost exactly the same thing. Well, kind of.”

MacMaster is referring to her and Leahy’s six musically gifted children, who today are the centrepiece of the MacMaster/Leahy live set though not because the couple necessarily envision showbiz careers for Mary Frances, Michael, Clare, Julia, Alec, and Sady. Rather, the pair realized early on that being on the road without their kids was infinitely harder than touring with them. That the children were already being home schooled (MacMaster has a teaching degree) made enacting that decision easier.

When vintage comedian W.C. Fields famously quipped, "Never work with animals or children," he clearly hadn’t seen the MasMaster/Leahy clan fiddling, step-dancing and positively delighting audiences.

MacMaster reflects. “This whole thing—first playing music by myself, then playing music with Donnell, then touring with Donnell and the children and all of us playing music together—has evolved in a very natural way.

True-life stories in the entertainment world (or anywhere) don’t come more remarkable than that.

“Flying notes, fast paced jigs and reels and polkas, paint can percussion and Gaelic lyrics, original music and tunes from Scotland, Ireland, the Maritimes, and elsewhere, piano, bagpipes, guitar, accordion, and of course fiddles: all those, in the hands and spirits of gifted musicians, will likely have a similar effect on the listeners of One.” -Music Road

Since the founding of a mixed voice choir in 1971, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge has gained an international reputation as one of the leading university choral groups in the world. In addition to its primary function of leading services three times a week in the College chapel, the choir keeps an active schedule recording, broadcasting, and performing throughout the UK and the world.

The choir has toured widely, including in Europe, the United States, Japan, China, Russia, and the Middle East. In 2000 it became the first Oxbridge mixed choir to perform at the BBC Proms, singing Bach’s St John Passion. The choir has collaborated with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in performances of Handel’s Jephtha in Spain, Belgium, the UK and the USA and again in performances of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, praised for ‘thrillingly fresh and feisty singing.’ Other collaborations include Manchester Camerata, Academy of Ancient Music, and the Schubert Ensemble. The choir gives frequent performances at many international festivals, including the Potsdam Sanssouci Music, Munich Opera, and Spitalfields Festivals and the Early Music Weekend at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.

Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, the Hot Sardines are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world.

In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice. And they even have a tap dancer.

During the last two years, the Hot Sardines have been featured at the Newport Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival. They have sold out NYC venues from Joe’s Pub to Bowery Ballroom and more than 150 performance dates from Chicago to London. They’ve released two albums on Universal Music Classics to critical raves and a No. 1 slot on the iTunes Jazz chart in the U.S. and internationally.

Bandleader Evan Palazzo and lead singer Elizabeth Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered a Craigslist ad about a jazz jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. The unlikely pair — she was a London School of Economics-educated travel writer who grew up in France, Canada and the Ivory Coast, he was a New York City born and raised actor who studied theater at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia—bonded over their love for Fats Waller. Influenced also by such greats as Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, they began playing open mic nights and small gigs and by 2011, they headlined Midsummer Night Swing at New York’s Lincoln Center.

“We found ourselves in the perfect place at the perfect time,” says Evan. “As we explored this 100 year-old jazz, we began to look at it as a journey forward, not so much as a look back. This is music for today, not a museum piece.”

Indeed, “People Will Say We’re In Love” from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! gets reinvented as a tart tango. Jazz standard “Comes Love” starts as a minuet before vocalist Elizabeth, singing in her native French, conjures up spirits of 1930s Paris. The Hot Sardines even upend Robert Palmer’s 1985 classic “Addicted To Love” with Elizabeth’s cool vocals and hot horn arrangements.

An internationally renowned repertory company, Ballet Jazz of Montreal (BJM) continues to grow with all the energy and spirit of exploration for which it has been known since its birth in 1972. Part ballet, part modern, part street dance, BJM defies categories with its delicious blend of hip, funky moves infused with infectious energy, humor and imagination.

Ballet Jazz is a diverse international troupe. The dancers have strong classical training, with classical vocabulary and aesthetics. But they mix everything, all disciplines, to the ballet language: modern, jazz, street dance, hip-hop, African dance. Everything is fluid, depending on the personal idea and the vocabulary of each individual choreographer. It brings new style to their work, but with reference — clear reference — to the ballet world.

Direct from Dublin, Ireland -- a dance troupe of world champion Irish step dancers together with a sensational eight-member traditional Irish band and vocalist.

Dublin Irish Dance is an exhilarating company whose members have performed throughout the world with Riverdance, Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, and Celtic Woman. The all-star cast brings to life the epic tale of Celtic culture, carrying its traditional melodies and steps to the New World with a gala celebration of Irish Music and Dance.

The evening’s program, Stepping Out, provides an extravaganza of sights and sounds of Irish Culture. The journey begins in rural Ireland, prior to the Famine, in kitchens, barns and fields. As the Great Hunger closes in, the people look west, across the ocean, to New York City.

Mingling with immigrants from around the globe, the Irish congregate in dance gatherings, some bound for the Appalachian Mountains where ancient Irish melodies fuse with African rhythms, creating American tap dance and early roots music. The journey leads us to the present moment, celebrating the incredible evolution of Irish traditional dance and music, and showcasing the new pioneers who will define the new standard of traditional Irish music and dance.

As a Dublin-born Irish dancer I now reside in the United States and as a result I am part of this continuing immigrant story. Northeast Kingdom native Jennifer Hartswick is one of the most refreshing new voices of the twenty-first century. A consummate performer, she thrills audiences as a vocalist, trumpeter, composer, lyricist and educator. She is equally at home singing soul, funk, pop and R&B, but her passion, without question, is jazz.

Born into a musical family, Jennifer began playing at the age of 4. In her early teens she became infatuated with the sounds of Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Clifford Brown and Ella Fitzgerald. After a stint living on the upper west side of Manhattan, she attended the Hartt School of Music where she studied the intricacies of the jazz idiom with Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Jackie McLean and many other highly prominent jazz artists.

At the age of 20 Jennifer was afforded the opportunity to join Trey Anastasio's new band, having already recorded on Story of the Ghost (Phish, 1998) and One Man's Trash (Trey Anastasio, 1998). She embraced the idea with open arms and began touring with him in 2001. In her seven years of touring, she has shared the stage and studio with such legends as Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, The Rolling Stones and Herbie Hancock to name a few.

In 2003 Jennifer released her own debut album; a soulful, horn-laden party entitled Fuse. “I always want an album to sound fresh,” says Hartswick. “It's amazing to see what happens when you put great musicians in a room together with no boundaries.”
